One of the first obligations of art is to make all useful things beautiful. — Edith Wharton
I love watching people create useful things. The care that can go into everything from making a loaf of bread to a piece of art. We tend to appreciate the art, but ignore many of the everyday things we use every day. Those that know me are aware there are few things I love quite as much as a great pair of shoes, a well weighted knife, a hand knit item, or (be still my heart,) a great pen. Its too easy to overlook the everyday. You’ve probably seen the video of a world famous violinist who started to play in a subway station. People who would have paid hundreds to hear him walked by without even noticing. Only a select few paused to listen and appreciate.
What everyday item would your character find beautiful? What would they even notice? What would they miss? One character may love an oil painting and another admires a well built car engine.
Is there a moment in your manuscript where the character could pause and see something (or perhaps someone) with fresh eyes and be in awe of its (their) beauty?
