About Eileen, the Speaker

As someone who spent years alone playing with her imaginary friends and having full conversations with her dogs, imagine Eileen’s surprise to find out she enjoys public speaking to actual people.

Eileen brings her unique style that combines useful information with humor to audiences from five to five hundred. She’s spoken to writer’s associations, corporate retreats, libraries, and schools on topics ranging from the science of story, writing craft topics, and the importance of being the hero in your own story.

In addition to keynotes, stand alone, workshops and leading university level creative writing courses with Simon Fraser University, Eileen is happy to create a workshop to meet your organization’s unique needs.

After over a decade in a successful publishing career, Eileen believes that many of the principals of storytelling can be used by businesses and organizations to inspire individuals create their best life and work possible.

Eileen’s evening keynote to nearly 400 people had us laughing and crying in equal measure. It ranks among the very best keynotes we’ve ever had and was listed by many attendees as their personal highlight of the whole conference.

Eileen is a popular speaker for writing conference both in Canada and abroad. She enjoys the opportunity to motivate other creative people. Eileen is known for her sense of humor combined with practical tips that writers can use in their own manuscripts and to excite them to take on their own creative projects.

Her books, Build Better Characters and Create Story Conflict provide the basis for many of her talks, but she’s also comfortable speaking about a range of writing craft and publishing topics. Talks can be modified for the intended audience and time needed.

Eileen is torn between being most proud of having won a hard fought “Battle of the Books” competition and having survived once talking in front of a group of over 300 grade one through three students.

Eileen enjoys sharing with students the hidden structure behind stories, the joy of writing and the behind the scenes tales of her own books.

Eileen was an engaging presenter who enthusiastically entertained and informed our students. Her humour has the students giggling and her interactive presentation had students talking, moving and playing. It is not always easy to engage teenagers: Eileen was able to do just that.
